Every so often, I post a rant about religion. I usually get a lot of reaction to it because people are very sensitive about their "faith". The reason I am so anti-religion is because it has caused a LOT of damage within my own family. I often have nightmares that are DIRECTLY associated to the brainwashing I received as a child. I get a lot of comments here on DA that I should just chill and ignore it….but the fact is, religion has and continues to damage the innocent children of those who drown in it. I cannot and will not be quiet about it any more than I can ignore child abuse…which is EXACTLY what it is. Below is EXACTLY what I am talking about. An excerpt from my front page here on DA. I ALWAYS choose to celebrate life, love life, and live life full of peace and love but there are times when I MUST speak up. Last night's nightmares and the left over emotions coupled with this tragic girl's puppetry, boils me over once again. For this I apologize! I want my site and gallery to be a place of JOY, HAPPINESS, and CELEBRATION of LIFE!!!
There is a WONDERFUL link at the end of this exchange. Don't feel compelled to read the back and forth drivel… but please DO scroll to the end and go to the link! It expresses so well how I feel!

you can block me if you want after reading this i don't care ur photo quality is great but shooting nothing but nudes and fetishes make u look like a horny photographer and it disgraces me to know that there are women out there who don't care if people see them naked it's disgusting that kind of thing is supposed to be shared by a married couple or your parents when you're younger not by the world nudes disgust me

`Pelicanh Mar 19, 2011
I have no problem with people expressing their opinions. Even though you tread a fine line of being rather disrespectful.
I suspect your views will change somewhat as you grow older, get more experience, and mature.
You don't know me, we've never met, and you have no idea what kind of person I am but somehow you have an idea of what I am like, my motives for what I shoot, and the "disgusting" sharing of nudes.
What you have to realize, Stefanie, is that people who read your comment will simply wonder,"What the hell is wrong with her!?"
It's kinda like you going into McDonald's and complaining about them selling hamburgers...it just makes you look silly and disturbed.
I'll only block you if you make personal attack comments on my models or me.
You don't have to agree...just be a nice girl. Be civil. And maybe...read...a lot about art history.

~burstinella Mar 19, 2011
well first of I'm 20 and even if that is young and even though I don't know you or what your taste in art is you don't know me either. My views will not change simply for the fact that I am a christian woman, so let them ask the question as to what's wrong with me. I just feel that maybe you should try photographing more than just nudes. Isn't that what defines an artist? I've also read much on art and it's history thanks to my art classes and the vast amount of materials available at the library. When I was younger one of my favorite pieces of historical art was(and somewhat still is)Nascita di Venere(The Birth Of Venus)-Botticelli. So please dont' tell me that I'll change my views because they won't change.

`Pelicanh Mar 20, 2011
Shooting nudes is just a side hobby for me. www.michaelhelms.com is what I do for a living. That's EXACTLY what I meant about judging. You have NO IDEA what else I shoot (and I DO shoot scenery, nature, flowers, people etc etc) but this is my "nudes" gallery thus there are nudes here.
I agree with what Dihan22 said below. I'd recommend you read up on the complete history of religion...ESPECIALLY the one you profess. It isn't pretty.
My major was theology, so not a good place to go with me.
Anyway... thank you for being civil. Agree to disagree.

~Dihan22 Mar 20, 2011
You haven’t even started to live. I'm 31 now and when I look back at my early 20's I know so much have changed in my views on religion, politics and even science. Believe me you have a long way to go.

As someone you studies art you must realize that a great artist usually specialize on one subject matter. You don’t see Jackson Pollock painting landscapes or Claude Monet throwing paint on canvas. Your argument has no substance.

“My views will not change simply for the fact that I am a Christian woman”. Hearing something like that scares me more than anything in world. No matter how innocent you may think that sentence is, its stubbornness like this that creates lunatic suicide bombers and fundamentalists.

As someone who obviously has an interest in art I hope one day you begin to appreciate the diverse range of art that the world has to offer. You don’t even need to like them but just to acknowledge its existence and value is enough.

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
look 's nice and all that you majored in theology but i don't believe everything i hear or see. secondly i visited your website and wow nothing really interesting. and you're welcome to my civility but i'm going to do the "christian" thing and turn the other cheek. may God have mercy on your soul because i'm going to pray for it but my religion is my own and "nudes" isn't in it it's of the world and i'm not going to be part of it when it burns to the ground. so i bid you adue have a nice life with the whores you call models

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
For starters I really could care less how old you are. And having a specialty is great and all but diversity is what creates a great artist. It's that diverse creativity that allows one to break out of a box or shell so my argument has "substance" it's your angle that doesn't. Secondly if a sentance like that scares you then maybe you should study up on my religion it's called Pentacostal in case you're wondering. I'm not afraid to fight for it either. And the "stubborness" you claim this is doesn't make "lunatic suicide bombers and fundamentalists" that would be the individual themselves who should probly check into a psycho ward for schizophrenia. Lastly I do appreciate art and obviously acknowledged this particular genre or there wouldn't be a post on it.

~Dihan22 Mar 20, 2011
I’m sure you don’t care about a lot of things but I was merely pointing out a fact that an average 20 year think they are mature and have full understanding of the world yet they don’t have the slightest clue. I found it amusing that Pelicanh picked up on that just from your views about his work. I wouldn’t be surprised if you lived in some sheltered life and probably never left you home town and yet you think you have the right to judge people!

If diversity is that important to you I would suggest you read up on other religion too before you are so quick to defend some belief. I've studied Christianly, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam thoroughly in the past 5 years. I’ve actually concluded that religion is for the weak, scared and for the desperate. Not something allot people would dare to say but I can say it because I’ve done the research, I bet you haven’t even seen the cover of the Quran and yet somehow settled on Christianity because it was the only thing that was taught to you. I’m sure Pelicanh have experimented and researched on other subject matter before he settled on this but I’m pretty sure you never did with you beliefs.

I know I’m wasting my time, in my experience anyone so quick to put religious beliefs into discussion do not have a logical mind or seem to inherit any common sense. So I’ll stop this debate right here and hope you remember this sometime in the future if by chance you have some miraculous epiphany and finally understand the real world.

PS. "lunatic suicide bombers" do not know of their mental state, they will think as you do, doing things for the great good and "would not be afraid to fight for" their beliefs. Thats how they are born, from a mind like yours and thats whats so scary about people like you.

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
personally this sounds more like you have no life if you claim that you're wasting your time on someone like me. and fyi i have seen the front covers of several religious doctrine books they kinda offer them fro rding at the library idiot. and also i don't know what ur beliefs are but based on your statements that dis my religion i would guess atheist. and also i've been exposed to more than just christianity growing up; ever heard of freedom of religion? yea i kinda have that. and pentacostal isn't just "some belief" it's my belief and i would greatly appreciate it if you would act mature and not dog on it. i'm not dissing whatever faith you have if you even have one so why don't you do the mature thing and leave it alone. and illogical to bring it a conversation? no it's quite the opposite. if someone wants to sit there and tell me that I'll change just because i'm not as old as they are and because i don't see eye to eye with them then i'm going to tell them why. My religion(since you claim o have sudied this for 5 years now you might get where i'm coming from but unlikely because i've been studying it for 10) tells me that th ways of the world are wrong and after experiencing it for myself i agree. i'm not just some "average 20 year old" who doesn't explore the world. My father was military so i've been exposed to a great deal about the world. it's a disgusting place and i find solace in my faith. you know what else it tells me? it tells me to forgive and turn the other cheeck so ou know what i'm gonna do? just that. i'll pray for your soul even if you feel i'm just being some conformist and end this conversation because that's what a mature person would have done. they would have respected another individual's religious beliefs instead of butting in a conversation that was never theirs to begin with.

P.S. if you're soooo scared of these "lunatic suicide bombers" and people like me then maybe you should check yourself into a mental facility because it sounds like you've got a really nasty case of theophobia

As a fellow deviant and a Christian (yes, the two CAN coexist), the fact that she feels this way hurts my heart. It would seem she missed Jesus' most important words, which I'll paraphrase since I don't remember the exact verse). "The greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. And the second is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself."

She either doesn't remember that the message is love, or she has forgotten to love herself. Either way, it makes me sad. She really needs to look back: Michaelangelo's David, hell, the Sistine Chapel, naked, nude, mostly naked. Even God himself is covered by just a thin little cloth! And these were not there originally in many of the period's works. The church thought it too risqué and decided to cover them. We have only interpretations of the true art because someone thought we couldn't handle it. My soul weeps for the things we've lost as well as the things we'll never have because some Christians can't seem to wrap their minds around the fact that God made us in his image.

Newsflash: you were born naked! Adam and Eve were naked! The serpent is the one that caused us to fear nakedness. I say bravo to Pelicanh for not fearing that nakedness and embracing it!

Sorry for the rant, but it's Christians with closed-minded thoughts that give us all a bad name.

I agree with ~Mass3yon3 and I have to add:
Nude art isn't wrong in itself. Like devmass3yon3 said, we were born nude, and only became shamed of our bodies b/c of our own minds.
Not to say that I agree with the person featured in your journal, but I can understand the concept of the nudes being ... shall we say "provocative"?
To me, there's a distinct difference between tasteful nude art and "something else" -- not necessarily porn but something that easily causes sexual arousal.
Take, for example, your piece here: [link]
It looks like two ladies gettin' something on with each other, and, imo, extremely sensual and sexually arousing. sorry if you felt like I perverted your intent, but I feel this way
On the other hand, of course, is where I feel like you've really captured the spirit of the woman :) For example, I Especially loved this series: [link]
I'm really impressed by this; Just... beautiful ;,-)
Not sexually provocative - a perfect example of artistic nude, imo

Of course, this is kind of hard to judge, b/c people differ on what is "provocative" and what is "sexually arousing".. after all, I may get roused by looking at two women together, but a single naked woman probably wouldn't cut it. (unless she's being sensual...?)

But, I feel like this is the premise for banning nude things in general; ANYthing can be taken the wrong way, and imo it's easier/harder to take it the wrong way for certain pictures and for certain people. so, to avoid confusion, they're just like "ban it all! :U"

Anyway, while I'm at it, I may as well say that I respect your pussy series
I understand the vulnerability and the softness of the pieces, and I don't think they're presented in anything close to a provocative state. :blowkiss:

You're so right. It's such a SUBJECTIVE issue. It is NOT a debate that can have any resolution. What is art? What is porn? Can porn be art? While it's easy to say if it is sexually arousing, then it is porn...that criteria does not work because of all the differences in what arouses one person and not another. A shoe, for instance can be a HIGHLY erotic object to some and DEFINITELY fall into the category of porn. It is also not possibly to define it by trying to discern the intent of the artist because only he knows the answer to that.
There is no definition of porn. There is no definition of art.
I shoot what I love and I love what I shoot. I don't really care what people think or feel about it.
But...it makes for some nice discussions and provokes thought. For that I am thankful.
Thank you for such a well thought out and presented comment!

i agree with you guys. im a 24yo male and a christian. my grandparents are the pastors and parents the associate pastors. by no means do i share some of the beliefs that some of these other 'christians' have.. i for one love all kinds of beauty. and we all know that if god made it it should be beautiful. sounds to me like some don't think all perspectives of beauty and art should be shared. i really hope you dont end up closing the DA account on account of the stupidity of others. and a side note. i dont know your friend Scar at all, but i think that just the fact that she can let herself be photographed is a testimony to what she may have been through and how she has come to love herself after all is said and done. i dont know Scar and im not trying to insinuate anything about her past, but thats how i look at things in life. (soorfor bad rammar and spelling, i was in a hurry to write this out)

It are people like this that put religion to shame.
I'm not religious, but I'm not atheist either. I would say I'm agnostic, but I do practice prayer and there are certainly aspects of some religions I agree with.

She's 20, I'm 19.... I know that there are some people at our age that don't think of topics such as religion, and if they do often it's come from their parents who put them into that religious practice. I challenge my boyfriend (who is Christian) on what he believes, because I wish he could see things from a different light. I don't think what I think is correct, but there is certainly aspects of Christianity I don't agree with- things like 'all sins are equal' and as long as you're forgiven by Jesus you can go to heaven. Uh, what?

I had a friend who was a Jehovah's witness. She explained the point of preaching door-to-door, and how once you've done it for x amount of hours you can be baptised. I was stunned- this is what their religious practice is? Annoying other people in the hopes of converting them by turning up at their door far too early in the weekend?
The funny thing was, when she moved out to live with her dad, she stopped being a Jehovah's witness.

Religious people make it seem like you have to be religious to be a good person- which is a stupid theory.
I really appreciate people that have studied religions extensively and can conclude they'd like to remain atheist- however I wouldn't say that religion is for 'the weak', because that's being judgmental.

Man, if you just love and appreciate life and the people in it, I'm sure that qualifies for any heaven that exists beyond this life.

So, I've got to chime in for another side of the religious field. I am certainly a religious man, and as one have found that there are no greater temples of worship than that which your models carry with them. While I'm aware that this plants me in the minority among theists, I'm uncertain what someone from the other side would have as their excuse for visiting your page anyhow.
