Every so often, I post a rant about religion. I usually get a lot of reaction to it because people are very sensitive about their "faith". The reason I am so anti-religion is because it has caused a LOT of damage within my own family. I often have nightmares that are DIRECTLY associated to the brainwashing I received as a child. I get a lot of comments here on DA that I should just chill and ignore it….but the fact is, religion has and continues to damage the innocent children of those who drown in it. I cannot and will not be quiet about it any more than I can ignore child abuse…which is EXACTLY what it is. Below is EXACTLY what I am talking about. An excerpt from my front page here on DA. I ALWAYS choose to celebrate life, love life, and live life full of peace and love but there are times when I MUST speak up. Last night's nightmares and the left over emotions coupled with this tragic girl's puppetry, boils me over once again. For this I apologize! I want my site and gallery to be a place of JOY, HAPPINESS, and CELEBRATION of LIFE!!!
There is a WONDERFUL link at the end of this exchange. Don't feel compelled to read the back and forth drivel… but please DO scroll to the end and go to the link! It expresses so well how I feel!

you can block me if you want after reading this i don't care ur photo quality is great but shooting nothing but nudes and fetishes make u look like a horny photographer and it disgraces me to know that there are women out there who don't care if people see them naked it's disgusting that kind of thing is supposed to be shared by a married couple or your parents when you're younger not by the world nudes disgust me

`Pelicanh Mar 19, 2011
I have no problem with people expressing their opinions. Even though you tread a fine line of being rather disrespectful.
I suspect your views will change somewhat as you grow older, get more experience, and mature.
You don't know me, we've never met, and you have no idea what kind of person I am but somehow you have an idea of what I am like, my motives for what I shoot, and the "disgusting" sharing of nudes.
What you have to realize, Stefanie, is that people who read your comment will simply wonder,"What the hell is wrong with her!?"
It's kinda like you going into McDonald's and complaining about them selling just makes you look silly and disturbed.
I'll only block you if you make personal attack comments on my models or me.
You don't have to agree...just be a nice girl. Be civil. And lot about art history.

~burstinella Mar 19, 2011
well first of I'm 20 and even if that is young and even though I don't know you or what your taste in art is you don't know me either. My views will not change simply for the fact that I am a christian woman, so let them ask the question as to what's wrong with me. I just feel that maybe you should try photographing more than just nudes. Isn't that what defines an artist? I've also read much on art and it's history thanks to my art classes and the vast amount of materials available at the library. When I was younger one of my favorite pieces of historical art was(and somewhat still is)Nascita di Venere(The Birth Of Venus)-Botticelli. So please dont' tell me that I'll change my views because they won't change.

`Pelicanh Mar 20, 2011
Shooting nudes is just a side hobby for me. is what I do for a living. That's EXACTLY what I meant about judging. You have NO IDEA what else I shoot (and I DO shoot scenery, nature, flowers, people etc etc) but this is my "nudes" gallery thus there are nudes here.
I agree with what Dihan22 said below. I'd recommend you read up on the complete history of religion...ESPECIALLY the one you profess. It isn't pretty.
My major was theology, so not a good place to go with me.
Anyway... thank you for being civil. Agree to disagree.

~Dihan22 Mar 20, 2011
You haven’t even started to live. I'm 31 now and when I look back at my early 20's I know so much have changed in my views on religion, politics and even science. Believe me you have a long way to go.

As someone you studies art you must realize that a great artist usually specialize on one subject matter. You don’t see Jackson Pollock painting landscapes or Claude Monet throwing paint on canvas. Your argument has no substance.

“My views will not change simply for the fact that I am a Christian woman”. Hearing something like that scares me more than anything in world. No matter how innocent you may think that sentence is, its stubbornness like this that creates lunatic suicide bombers and fundamentalists.

As someone who obviously has an interest in art I hope one day you begin to appreciate the diverse range of art that the world has to offer. You don’t even need to like them but just to acknowledge its existence and value is enough.

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
look 's nice and all that you majored in theology but i don't believe everything i hear or see. secondly i visited your website and wow nothing really interesting. and you're welcome to my civility but i'm going to do the "christian" thing and turn the other cheek. may God have mercy on your soul because i'm going to pray for it but my religion is my own and "nudes" isn't in it it's of the world and i'm not going to be part of it when it burns to the ground. so i bid you adue have a nice life with the whores you call models

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
For starters I really could care less how old you are. And having a specialty is great and all but diversity is what creates a great artist. It's that diverse creativity that allows one to break out of a box or shell so my argument has "substance" it's your angle that doesn't. Secondly if a sentance like that scares you then maybe you should study up on my religion it's called Pentacostal in case you're wondering. I'm not afraid to fight for it either. And the "stubborness" you claim this is doesn't make "lunatic suicide bombers and fundamentalists" that would be the individual themselves who should probly check into a psycho ward for schizophrenia. Lastly I do appreciate art and obviously acknowledged this particular genre or there wouldn't be a post on it.

~Dihan22 Mar 20, 2011
I’m sure you don’t care about a lot of things but I was merely pointing out a fact that an average 20 year think they are mature and have full understanding of the world yet they don’t have the slightest clue. I found it amusing that Pelicanh picked up on that just from your views about his work. I wouldn’t be surprised if you lived in some sheltered life and probably never left you home town and yet you think you have the right to judge people!

If diversity is that important to you I would suggest you read up on other religion too before you are so quick to defend some belief. I've studied Christianly, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam thoroughly in the past 5 years. I’ve actually concluded that religion is for the weak, scared and for the desperate. Not something allot people would dare to say but I can say it because I’ve done the research, I bet you haven’t even seen the cover of the Quran and yet somehow settled on Christianity because it was the only thing that was taught to you. I’m sure Pelicanh have experimented and researched on other subject matter before he settled on this but I’m pretty sure you never did with you beliefs.

I know I’m wasting my time, in my experience anyone so quick to put religious beliefs into discussion do not have a logical mind or seem to inherit any common sense. So I’ll stop this debate right here and hope you remember this sometime in the future if by chance you have some miraculous epiphany and finally understand the real world.

PS. "lunatic suicide bombers" do not know of their mental state, they will think as you do, doing things for the great good and "would not be afraid to fight for" their beliefs. Thats how they are born, from a mind like yours and thats whats so scary about people like you.

~burstinella Mar 20, 2011
personally this sounds more like you have no life if you claim that you're wasting your time on someone like me. and fyi i have seen the front covers of several religious doctrine books they kinda offer them fro rding at the library idiot. and also i don't know what ur beliefs are but based on your statements that dis my religion i would guess atheist. and also i've been exposed to more than just christianity growing up; ever heard of freedom of religion? yea i kinda have that. and pentacostal isn't just "some belief" it's my belief and i would greatly appreciate it if you would act mature and not dog on it. i'm not dissing whatever faith you have if you even have one so why don't you do the mature thing and leave it alone. and illogical to bring it a conversation? no it's quite the opposite. if someone wants to sit there and tell me that I'll change just because i'm not as old as they are and because i don't see eye to eye with them then i'm going to tell them why. My religion(since you claim o have sudied this for 5 years now you might get where i'm coming from but unlikely because i've been studying it for 10) tells me that th ways of the world are wrong and after experiencing it for myself i agree. i'm not just some "average 20 year old" who doesn't explore the world. My father was military so i've been exposed to a great deal about the world. it's a disgusting place and i find solace in my faith. you know what else it tells me? it tells me to forgive and turn the other cheeck so ou know what i'm gonna do? just that. i'll pray for your soul even if you feel i'm just being some conformist and end this conversation because that's what a mature person would have done. they would have respected another individual's religious beliefs instead of butting in a conversation that was never theirs to begin with.

P.S. if you're soooo scared of these "lunatic suicide bombers" and people like me then maybe you should check yourself into a mental facility because it sounds like you've got a really nasty case of theophobia

As a fellow deviant and a Christian (yes, the two CAN coexist), the fact that she feels this way hurts my heart. It would seem she missed Jesus' most important words, which I'll paraphrase since I don't remember the exact verse). "The greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. And the second is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself."

She either doesn't remember that the message is love, or she has forgotten to love herself. Either way, it makes me sad. She really needs to look back: Michaelangelo's David, hell, the Sistine Chapel, naked, nude, mostly naked. Even God himself is covered by just a thin little cloth! And these were not there originally in many of the period's works. The church thought it too risqué and decided to cover them. We have only interpretations of the true art because someone thought we couldn't handle it. My soul weeps for the things we've lost as well as the things we'll never have because some Christians can't seem to wrap their minds around the fact that God made us in his image.

Newsflash: you were born naked! Adam and Eve were naked! The serpent is the one that caused us to fear nakedness. I say bravo to Pelicanh for not fearing that nakedness and embracing it!

Sorry for the rant, but it's Christians with closed-minded thoughts that give us all a bad name.

I agree with ~Mass3yon3 and I have to add:
Nude art isn't wrong in itself. Like devmass3yon3 said, we were born nude, and only became shamed of our bodies b/c of our own minds.
Not to say that I agree with the person featured in your journal, but I can understand the concept of the nudes being ... shall we say "provocative"?
To me, there's a distinct difference between tasteful nude art and "something else" -- not necessarily porn but something that easily causes sexual arousal.
Take, for example, your piece here: [link]
It looks like two ladies gettin' something on with each other, and, imo, extremely sensual and sexually arousing. sorry if you felt like I perverted your intent, but I feel this way
On the other hand, of course, is where I feel like you've really captured the spirit of the woman :) For example, I Especially loved this series: [link]
I'm really impressed by this; Just... beautiful ;,-)
Not sexually provocative - a perfect example of artistic nude, imo

Of course, this is kind of hard to judge, b/c people differ on what is "provocative" and what is "sexually arousing".. after all, I may get roused by looking at two women together, but a single naked woman probably wouldn't cut it. (unless she's being sensual...?)

But, I feel like this is the premise for banning nude things in general; ANYthing can be taken the wrong way, and imo it's easier/harder to take it the wrong way for certain pictures and for certain people. so, to avoid confusion, they're just like "ban it all! :U"

Anyway, while I'm at it, I may as well say that I respect your pussy series
I understand the vulnerability and the softness of the pieces, and I don't think they're presented in anything close to a provocative state. :blowkiss:
Pelicanh Featured By Owner Oct 22, 2011  Professional Photographer
You're so right. It's such a SUBJECTIVE issue. It is NOT a debate that can have any resolution. What is art? What is porn? Can porn be art? While it's easy to say if it is sexually arousing, then it is porn...that criteria does not work because of all the differences in what arouses one person and not another. A shoe, for instance can be a HIGHLY erotic object to some and DEFINITELY fall into the category of porn. It is also not possibly to define it by trying to discern the intent of the artist because only he knows the answer to that.
There is no definition of porn. There is no definition of art.
I shoot what I love and I love what I shoot. I don't really care what people think or feel about it. makes for some nice discussions and provokes thought. For that I am thankful.
Thank you for such a well thought out and presented comment!

It are people like this that put religion to shame.
I'm not religious, but I'm not atheist either. I would say I'm agnostic, but I do practice prayer and there are certainly aspects of some religions I agree with.

She's 20, I'm 19.... I know that there are some people at our age that don't think of topics such as religion, and if they do often it's come from their parents who put them into that religious practice. I challenge my boyfriend (who is Christian) on what he believes, because I wish he could see things from a different light. I don't think what I think is correct, but there is certainly aspects of Christianity I don't agree with- things like 'all sins are equal' and as long as you're forgiven by Jesus you can go to heaven. Uh, what?

I had a friend who was a Jehovah's witness. She explained the point of preaching door-to-door, and how once you've done it for x amount of hours you can be baptised. I was stunned- this is what their religious practice is? Annoying other people in the hopes of converting them by turning up at their door far too early in the weekend?
The funny thing was, when she moved out to live with her dad, she stopped being a Jehovah's witness.

Religious people make it seem like you have to be religious to be a good person- which is a stupid theory.
I really appreciate people that have studied religions extensively and can conclude they'd like to remain atheist- however I wouldn't say that religion is for 'the weak', because that's being judgmental.

Man, if you just love and appreciate life and the people in it, I'm sure that qualifies for any heaven that exists beyond this life.

So, I've got to chime in for another side of the religious field. I am certainly a religious man, and as one have found that there are no greater temples of worship than that which your models carry with them. While I'm aware that this plants me in the minority among theists, I'm uncertain what someone from the other side would have as their excuse for visiting your page anyhow.

I've seen that video before. It's definitely a beautiful way of viewing the significance of our insignificance, and what we should do with the only lives we will ever be able to live. I think of that video every time I hear Wake Up, now. : )

Curious, have you seen AronRa's Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism series? It's worth checking out when you have some spare time: [link]

On the topic of that young woman, I find it ridiculous when people try to rationalize their opinions with their religious beliefs, but then get offended when you call into question that rationalization. As far as I'm concerned, people can believe whatever they want, but as soon as they bring those beliefs into a conversation, or use them to rationalize anything, or try to make a factual claim based on them, then they are fair game for dissection and criticism. Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion, and it certainly does not mean that you get a free pass to say anything you want just because it's religious in nature - that is a very intellectually dishonest expectation.

Anyway, keep the faith, Pelicanh! (I say with a chuckle)

To me, its tragic the way religion and Christianity has become so hateful...
I am a Christian, though I hate to call myself that sometimes because of the people it lumps me in with, as I see many people on the internet saying (encouraging!) ^_^ describe my belief system is pointless here, but Jesus was about love and people who make it about the dogma or doctrines just really make me sad. And there are so many of them too.

I'm so sorry religion has caused so much pain in your life and many others...not like it means anything haha. Me being sorry doesn't fix anything. But the world is a tragic, broken place full of broken people. I'm not surprised the faith has been twisted beyond recognition by some.

Also, to think your views won't change after the age of 20 just because of your faith, that is so assume you already have all the information about life. Or just stupid, if you have determined no new information will effect what you think. Life is learning...the whole time.

Did anyone mention to this girl that she might want to read Genesis? You know, the whole, nudity and feeling comfortable being naked, BEFORE the fall, and being ashamed about being naked AFTER sin was introduced to the world? This kind of ignorance of her OWN religion doesn't sound very educated to me, especially with the lack of coherent English.

I felt a bit insulted when I read Dihan22's point about religion on the whole being for "the weak, scared, and for the desperate" (me being a Christian and all), but that little remark is greatly overshadowed by burstinella's absolute political and religious incorrectness. If nudity is so wrong in our religion, then why are there so many paintings by christian artists that depict nudity?

I think the worst part of that whole thing is that she called your models whores :/ that's just a horrible thing to do, especially because she doesn't know them at all, no one should make judgments like that about people.
An over religious attitude is a true shame. Everyday I'm becoming more and more depressed because my mom is trying to "fix" me, to believe in god. I don't judge her for her beliefs and i love that she believes because it makes her a part of the beautiful person she is, but she judges me for mine and doesn't accept that it's part of who I am. While I try not to bring my atheism up, to avoid hurting her, she hurts me more than she knows by always bringing up christianity and all the baggage she has about it and me.
People like that woman bother me, especially because there is a point where even if they aren't yelling or cussing their words become uncivil, and even to a point hurtful.

Reading this was just sad. I'm very sorry they attacked your taste in art, I personally love your photographs. They are beautiful! I also love the fact that you take photos of women who are not traditionally beautiful. I am the type of woman that has plenty of piercings and digs dying my hair crazy colors and I respect a man that sees the beauty in it.
On the matter of religion, I was also brainwashed as a child. I am completely against it because of many reasons, but mainly because I have seen the harm it has and still does cause all over the world. Also many people who are religious are very hypocritical especially when they pick and chose what they WANT the bible to say. Bottom line is that if I know someone who has read the entire bible and is not SLIGHTLY offended by the cruel things that can be found in there, I lose a bit of respect for them. I may not be religious, but just as you, that doesn't make me a bad person. And religious individuals don't even realize that if no one had ever told them God existed, they wouldn't even "know" he/she were there, a serious flaw that many choose to ignore. I chose to believe in being good purely because I respect everyone as long as they respect me. I don't need a religion to define my morals or who I am.
I respect your opinion very much and I'm glad I'm not alone.

As a pretty easy-going, non-denominational Christian, I am offended on both parts of this argument .

For one- the human body is beautiful and should not be considered offensive. I went to art school and drew nudes, and for the most part, it didn't bother me at all. I was raised Southern Baptist (as my family is) but raised around a variety of people from all backgrounds. I have slowly learned over the years about different religions and beliefs as well as science. I still believe in God and Jesus Christ. Should I be negatively associated with Christians who are more conservative and judgemental (when we really are NOT supposed to be?) No one is perfect, people. I think when you can learn to love yourself and your body with all it's "flaws" (if you've neglected it over the years), then you can love and treat others as you would yourself. The Golden Rule in many beliefs. :)

On the artist's argument- I feel saddened that you are so against religion, but after people reacting in such radical ways that have been recorded in history and your family, I can understand it. But please don't consider me brainwashed as you say you were as a child.

Just as a note on someone saying the Christian/Jewish/Islamic God being narcissistic and violent - Although it says in the Old Testament "I am a jealous God," I can't see that being completely right since jealousy is a sin, and God and Jesus aren't sinners. And Jesus (dpreading the word of God) preaches peace, tolerance, and loving thy neighbor and enemy. Just saying... :)

Once again-
Pelicahn, keep doing your thing. Beauty and art is in the eye of the beholder. <3

If the has such an issue with nudes and think's these models are whores, why is she going around searching on DA nude art and wasting her 20 year old life criticizing an art form?
i lived in Utah for year when i went to Utah State University and everyone out there, was like this woman. in the library they put up an art gallery and a student had drawn a mermaid, a traditional nude mermaid, the mormons were in an uproar about it and it was removed the next day because it promoted 'pornography'

This chick makes me really sad. She talks about how disgusting the world is and I can't imagine her ever having a day where she appreciated the beauty her God created all around her. I was pretty sheltered most of my life and 20 was very much the beginning of my opening my mind and seeing that while there are terrible things about the world there are just as many beautiful things about it. A lot of the things I was inadvertently "taught" about life, the body and relationships were incorrect and stemmed from fear and misunderstanding. I hope if she doesn't grow and open herself up to see the wonderful aspects of the world she lives in that she finds a better place in whatever afterlife she's expecting. Because she's working really hard to prevent herself from enjoying the world that she is in right now and that's not an existence I'd wish on anyone.

I rarely to never post on here. I am a photo editor, and a good one at an international agency. But this is just crazy..Pentacostal?

Really? Thats like a branch of Christianity that cherry picked a bunch of cool shit and eliminated the stuff that conveniently creates the kind of guilt that lends the belief to shape it, or edit/interpret to their liking. So ya know, so theres no deep seeded guilt for what ever weak transgression you've partaken in, and your first blow job does not count....Pentecostal is more like an umbrella term that combines and includes/excludes different aspects from varying theologies and cultures.

I'm glad there's all these sprouting non-denom organizations posing as religious houses of worship. Because now I can feel absolved every Sunday after producing nude photo shoots, and banging the interns all week. I would love to feel guilty, but I'm going to turn the other cheek, get drunk, while (s)texting my intern(s). Ill ask for forgiveness later. Much much later.

Bitch, you're 20. You're not remotely qualified to judge the guys artistic depth, credibility, whether its interesting or not...or his aim in life as an artist or person by viewing his work. You have no idea what makes or quantifies a real artist. You have been studying Pentacostalism for 10 years by way of being dragged to church to sit through the droning and brainwashing you describe as studying. As if you had the choice...And in between High School and focusing on grades you were apparently Good-Will-Hunting it through the realms of world religion, and what makes photography 'wow, not that interesting'.

You judge, call these beautiful women whores, and the man who creates the art we all enjoy wrong. But its like - who the fuck are you?! And what is your contribution to society that is so great that you feel compelled to act this way? So what, are you a child prodigy thats already cured hunger, hunted down Milosevic, Bin-Laden, and and recovered the ark and I missed it on CNN? And now you're just bored and lowering your bar to nude artisans/models for something to mix up your day? I doubt it...

Don't pray for my soul in your prayers. In fact, dont bring me up at all. I've reconciled my place in this world. I became more worldly in 3 weeks in Kosovo than you have had in your extensive pre-pubescent to Senior year time span of such impressive religious schooling.

You should not only be ashamed for creating this string, busting on a gifted artist like you're Jesus with a Leica, but for also avoiding using that precious time on math, and science and graphs and shit.

wow - you could just not look at his work. Or turn on the mature filter...You are 20, and nobody gives a crap what you think makes a good artist. Or picture, Christian, traffic-driver, robocop, or bank robber.

Sorry to everyone else...this is time I should have spent editing something more productive. Or drunk texting an intern. Or playing some Black Ops.

Roger that..I will definitely hit you up when i get some time down there. I was just in Palm Springs shooting a car. I did catch myself thinking that I do have a tendency to hurry out because Seattle is a relatively short flight. And then later I find myself saying 'awww, if i stayed one more day I could have......'But yeah, one day you'll get a call from some weird guy who's passing through town and is subsequently thirsty :)

I'm interviewing for ESPN the magazine's Sr. Editor post this week. It'll probably be a lateral move, but I've wanted that gig for a long time now. So maybe one day, if things go well on my side, I can share some budget on your imagery or services? I could see your perspective on a few sexy female athletes..Paula Creamer? That would be righteous....

something fun to think about anyway! And in todays economy, people looking out for people man..

That video was really beautiful. It made me smile, I think I'll watch it again.
My views on religion are pretty similar to yours, so I don't have much to add in that regard. I do have religious friends though who practice their faith without trying to force it on me or others, for which I respect them a great deal. In my eyes, if you're so committed to your religion and truly believe in your faith you wouldn't feel the need to shove it down my throat.

Anyway, gonna watch that vid again, cuz it was pretty awesome.

Also would like to add that you could sue her for libel if you wanted to. What she said isn't just a matter of opinion, it is defaming and can harm your business. Might want to consult a lawyer in your area if you want to sue her butt for what she's said.

That poor, simple minded little girl. She's too stubborn to understand that she doesn't have a clue about life. I'm only 7 years older than her and I can safely say that when I was 20 I was very immature. It doesn't matter the religion; personalities change, people change over time. With change a person's view on religion changes. I've changed a lot. My views on religion have changed.

I find your work beautiful. We are born naked. Her 'God' choose it that way(I'm not religious so...). If her 'God' wanted us to cover up 'he' would have had us be born fully clothed. Her religion is a crutch that prohibits her from growing as a person.

There's nothing disgraceful or disgusting about the human body. This girl has deep seeded issues with her own body she needs to address. She shouldn't have commented at all. What , did she think it would make you change your mind about your work and cause you to shut this account down?

Her idiocy is appalling.

Religions are just cults with more members....that's my take on it. And furthermore, what the hell is she doing on DA with such a closed mind. Maybe she needs to stick with Dora the Explorer and the Teletubbies (even tho, they don't wear clothes either!)

The "conversation" was a pain to read but I like to torture myself sometimes. I do appreciate the link, it was a wonderful video.

"Honey Badger Don't Give a Shit!" Sorry, I had too, it was too tempting. Enjoy that Heineken.

I hope you don't feel ALL Christians are like this. I believe in God, and technically have the same faith as the woman above, but I could never see myself actually being offended by someone's art like that, nevermind tasteful nudes like yours. I wish I had the same courage as those women.
But I understand what you mean. I hardly associate with Christians and only loosely classify myself as one because of the way I've seen people behave. I'm not anti-religion, but I don't think many Christians have the right idea.
Of course, I'm 18, so I could be talking out of my ass.

sad, sad, sad.....i pratice buddhism, and i consider myself a christian, i am an art model. i'm nekkid all the time in front of artists. if that poster feels that way about you, i can only imagine what she thinks of the models. i love your work and how you present the beauty of women. i understand why you would respond to this person, but my personal opinion: i would've ignored her. some people are too ignorant to engage with. sorry that you felt so upset by a person like that. i admire your work so much, and you're a wonderful writer too! people like that live in their own hell. refuse to let them draw you into their drama. you are much more evolved than that....;)
