John Lennon - 9 October 1940 - 8 December 1980

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 8, 2010, 1:06 AM
Thirty years ago today John Lennon was brutally murdered. A man, whose name I refuse to even write, put four bullets in a poet, a husband, a father, and a dreamer.

Yoko Ono asks,"Why would you want to kill John? He was an artist!"

I could rant and rave about the tragic level of violence in this country and in the world. I could go off about the ignorance of hand guns… weapons whose ONLY purpose, it seems, is to kill people. I could blog about gun control, freedom of speech, and the insane way we kill our dreamers.

But what I want to say today is what I have written about so many times in these journals. What I want to repeat today is not even remotely original. A simple message of peace and love.
I will once again direct you all to listen to the words, the intent, and the DREAM of this simple, beautiful, meaningful piece of music. I'm going to make this day of remembrance meaningful by keeping John Lennon's dream alive. May our collective imaginations bear real fruit.…

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Tonight, I'll light a candle and raise a Heineken to John Lennon. I miss him.

  • Listening to: the hum of the G5
  • Drinking: Heineken

You do have the best journal entries on all of deviantArt. Sometimes for their humour, and sometimes because they show, with compasion and grace the foibles of the human condition. Sometimes by simply stating what is. Thank you for them all.

I remember the first time I realised that John and I were not alive together. I was born 6 years after his murder. I wept.

John is my largest inspiration. My entire life. It's very sad ;____;

I agree it is sad that someone with a life's history of abusing women is not just a favorite singer or celebrity but your "largest inspiration" Really sad I have to say.
Yushimi Featured By Owner Dec 13, 2010
Riiiiight. Largest artistic inspiration. No. I don't go around abusing women. :/

I asked the same question about guns, and I was told, "guns only have the reason we give it".
Some people use their guns to shoot beer cans, some for deer, some for sport, and unfortunately, some for murder. If a gun sat around somewhere in a different universe where man never existed, the gun would have no purpose because we aren't around to give it one. if that makes sense..

On topic, it's a damn shame that he was killed. If I had the ability to raise anyone from the dead, it would definitely be Lennon.

I will say something because I too am a Beatles fan as well as a John Lennon fan and since I was about 12 I wore black on the 8th of December in remembrance of John and his music. He was a good man, no words that have ever been spoken in such a more cliche way to have a meaning that rings as true as those five. John has left such a mark on this world that I feel no human alive this day can quite come close to touching. R.I.P John and may your dreams eventually come true.

i agree with Leeslysyd

if he hadn't been murdered in cold blood for no reason...
would he be as much a hero as he is made to be today?

that being said...
5 shots from a .38 special....
MDC couldn't put two in Yoko?
THAT is a real shame....

dont wann a start any contraversy but lennon was an open and funder of the irish republican army he admitted to giving over half a million to there"cause" of killing british soliders so he claimed all you need is love yet funded the biggest killing machine of the time now he admitted this this isnt rumors also howard marks in his autobios said that while he was meeting "the provos" lennon was also there to raise funds for them... hardly giving peace a chance when we continued to fight here for another 25yrs sad but true(metallica) lol anyway makeivelli once said live by the sword die by the sword i think the same applies to guns i truely believe the beatles are legendary nothing compares TO THEM THEY STILL INSPIRE TODAY BUT LENNONS NOT AS CLEAN CUT AS HIS RED ROSE TINTED GLASSES MADE OUT

Michael, I know you're a busy busy man, but I have a feeling you will love a band called Cage the Elephant. they've got this awesome blues-rock feel and they sing a lot about how fucked up the world is and how it needs to be stopped. This is from a song called Lotus:

"Fell into a daze
And found my mind was gone and laid to waste
A battle ground indeed
Where holy wars have taken place
I saw the sun set watched it travel down
And tear through the ground
The hate the drives us
Needs to be stopped"

anyway, give them a look up on youtube if you ever have a few. I LOVE YOU MICHAEL. :blowkiss:

Such a loss, like other who have been shot or died by some dissease.

Martin Luther King.
John F. Kennedy
Princess Di
Freddy Mercury

Iron Maiden's: "Only the good die young"

The demon in your mind will rape you in your bed at night
The wisdom of ages, the lies and outrages concealed
Time it waits for no man
My future is revealed
Time it waits for no man
My fate is sealed

If I cancel tomorrow the undead will thank me today
Fly in the face of the prophets I mock your morality plays
The moon is red and bleeding
The sun is burned and black
The book of life is silent
No turning back

Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
All the evil seem to live forever
Only the good die young
Only the good die young

Mystery madman, a victim of cruel charade
Some innocent pawn in an end game, one more stalemate
Is death another birthday?
A way to kiss your dreams goodbye?
Do the undead live within us?
And look through our eyes?

Walking on water are miracles all you can trust
Measure your coffin does is measure up to your lust?
So I think I'll leave you
With your bishops and your guilt
So until the next time
Have a good sin

Or Queen's: "Is this the world we created"

Just think of all those hungry mouths we have to feed
Take a look at all the suffering we breed
So many lonely faces scattered all around
Searching for what they need.
Is this the world we created
What did we do it for
Is this the world we invaded
Against the law
So it seems in the end
Is this what we're all living for today
The world that we created.
You know that everyday a helpless child is born
Who needs some loving care inside a happy home
Somewhere a wealthy man is sitting on his throne
Waiting for life to go by.
Is this the world we created, we made it on our own
Is this the world we devastated, right to the bone
If there's a God in the sky looking down
What can he think of what we've done
To the world that He created.

I was 11 when John Lennon was murdered.... I remember the sense of loss I felt when I heard the tragic news. I loved The Beatles ever since I remember hearing them for the first time when I was 2.... that song was Let it Be. Yes, I grew up listening to Beatles songs and hoped they would make music together again, but that hoped was shattered when John Lennon was gone. Although I felt sad I couldn't bring myself to hate the sick monster who murdered him because if I did, evil would have won. So I stood by Lennon and embraced his genious that so poetically spoke through song, deeds and words and joined him keeping his spirit alive to this day in remembrance of him, so love did win after all!
Thank you Michael for taking the time to remember one of the greatest artists who ever walked this earth. :peace:

Reading all the negative comments that people have posted i believe he did do alot of bad shit when he was alive, i'm sure from the point of view of Cynthia he was an absolute asshole, but we forget the simple fact that he was HUMAN. People love to shout out all the negatives of people to make them seem like less of a person. We love seeing the downfall of gods (not saying he's a god, just a metaphor). Writing beautiful songs doesn't make it right but either way he helped people in his own way, no matter all the horrible shit he did in his personal life. He did so much good for the world by inspiring millions, he made the world a better place in a time of depression and suppression by the music he created.

You can say all the shit you want about his personal life and how much of a drug addict he was but what i've gotten out of his music is happiness and inspiration. Sometimes that's all that matters.

:peace: Just Imagine.

oh just adding to that i'm not saying it's right what he did, and i'm sure he was a horrible person in many ways but thus is what excessive drug use will do to people - anyways my point remains the same. just wanted to clarify i'm not saying it makes it right or ok -.-

Wow America is all about Hollywood!
What a horrible journal entry. 95% of the people responding here don't remember John Lennon and really know nothing about him. They just know he is cool in the hippie croud.

John Lennon was a dispicable person. As other have noted he was a drug addict and abused women. Just because someone is poet, a husband, a father, a dreamer or an artist doesn't mean he isn't a scumbag bastard. In this country bad things people do that people condem or put you in jail for seem to be forgiven if you write songs someone likes. Seems moral obligation is dependent on a ratio that factors in your record sales.

I've really enjoyed watching the documentaries this week about his life with and after the Beatles. It would have been so nice to see what he would have done through the years.

he was great.... unfortunately I wasnt around before he died so all I have gotten to see is the aftermath but from what I have seen and heard he was a great man who was taken way before his time.... some one who's ideas were way ahead of his own time... I wish he had gotten to stay here longer I would have loved to see what other brilliant things he could have done

John was a great man. I think his song 'Working Class Hero' sums up my life. I wish I'd been alive twenty years earlier just so I could have met him.

They hurt you at home
Hit you at school
Hate you if you're clever
And dispise the fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow the rules

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero then come follow me...

I wasn't even born until after he died.. and his message gets to even me, someone from an entirely different era. There's something about some artists... their art is immortal ; their thoughts, their feelings, their words, they'll never die, even if their physical body has.

In your description of the man you left out adulterer, junkie and for many years, child abandoner. John Lennon, truth be told was a hedonistic drug abuser no different than a thousand other musicians. The only thing separating Lennon from any other hippie that sang or wrote drug induced poetry was millions of dollars. Did he deserve to die? No of course not but to go canonizing a man infamous for statutory rape of pubescent girls and leading a bunch of hippies, I think not.

You want to fancy him some great humanitarian? Did he ever build houses for the homeless? did irrigation ditches? How often did he work in one of New York's soup kitchens? How many free shows did he do IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER to raise money for needy people? Sucking on a bong bitching about the world doesn't make you a humanitarian. He had millions of dollars and months of free time on his hand and to my knowledge he did far less philanthropy than most musicians do today.

You say he was brutally murdered? If by that you mean he was shot, he was, but so were hundreds of people in the same city far, far better, more just, more moral than him you fail to speak for.

Tupac, Morrison and The Notorious B.I.G are all dead too, however I mourn a hundred time more for my neighbor who died of natural causes an old man who worked by the calluses on his hands raising a beautiful family than any musician who wrote drug induced poetry.

Just my $.02
