I didn't just get a visit....I LIVE with SANTA KAZ. She knows when I've been naughty (all the time) and knows when I've been nice (try try again), she knows when I am sleeping (not enough), and knows when I'm awake.
My lovely lady, Kaz. (short for Kazuki).
I'll open comments so you can all wish each other MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I was waiting for a client to show up at my studio today. So I was setting lights and decided to run a test to see if I liked what I had set up. I ended up kinda liking the photo, so I might use it for a new Facebook header. Meanwhile...how many of you know the reference on my T-shirt!???
Comments!??
PS - I changed the file. This is an update version as of 12/14/14.

Just got home from a 3 day shoot in Vegas. This was the view from my balcony at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. I had a nice suite on the 31st floor!
Had the pleasure of shooting some of the girls from the "Jubilee" show there. What wonderful ladies. Also got to see "The Blue Man Group" show because a client/friend is the guitar player for them, so she got me comped. YAY Cool show.
All in all - a fun but exhausting trip. Flew into Burbank this afternoon and we're off to Universal Studios tonight to take our wonderful little boy to see lights!
This is not a terrific shot - it was done with my iPhone. But I thought it was pretty.

Another of the images from a shoot with the wonderful Marica Hase. Kimono styling by Kaz Matamura. Rope work by the crazy brilliant Marcus Ranum   mjranum.deviantart.com
Again - if you are a photographer interested in doing this kind of work - it is IMPERATIVE that you find a GREAT kimono stylist AND a GREAT rigger (rope person). Otherwise, your work will be passed off as insincere, immature, and it just plain makes you look bad. Every fold of the kimono has to be right, the undergarments have to hang correctly, the obi has to be tied correctly and hang where it should....there are a host of very specific items to address. The rope work has to be done correctly too.
If you just want things to look sort of "Asian", then by all means, have fun but just know there is a HUGE difference between something that is more for fun and/or goofing around, and those who are serious about this kind of image. Both have merit, but what I am saying is that there are a LOT of images on DA with this sort of thing done incorrectly.
I am allowing comments on this image because there needs to be discussion about the proper use of rope and proper styling of clothing. Bad rope work can cause permanent nerve damage!

While I do journal on here occasionally, I thought many of you might like to follow my journeys on Facebook. If so here's the link:
www.facebook.com/helmsphotogra…

I have also been getting a bit of crap lately about allowing and not allowing comments. One reader suggested it was "arrogant" of me to NOT allow comments. ha Anyone really interested in why I sometimes do and sometimes do NOT allow comments should go back and read some of my journals on this topic. I don't really feel compelled to explain it all YET AGAIN but a teeny synopsis would be simply that I don't have time to respond and, more importantly monitor, all the comments. I have a new little two year old boy so I enjoy spending more time with him.

We recently traveled to Japan. I work over there once or twice a year and try to get in a little sight seeing while I'm there. So I'll be posting a few more pix of that, but again, there are some fun stories and videos on my Facebook page. Please do come look.

I'll be posting more journals here in the future too. I'm not absent from DA, just busy.

Hope you all have a great time here
Michael

Comments Disabled... what a sigh of relief!!!!

It's been REALLY refreshing to NOT have trolls and flamers. Images like those in my gallery inevitably receive all sorts of negative commentary. Since I have disabled comments, the attention craving jerks really have not bothered me. The reason is, as I suspected all along... take away their public forum and they go back into their holes. Some people have complained that I can't take criticism. That is simply laughable. After 35 years in one of the most competitive markets in the world, I've heard just about everything. Yea - it's nice to hear "great shot", or "that's beautiful...nice lighting". But I don't really need pats on the back. And I no longer will tolerate comments like, "Your model needs to be taken out back and shot like the whore dog she is!" or "she's too fuckin skinny, she needs to eat something".
I could care less what people say about me personally but I will NOT tolerate flaming or trolling my models. THAT is why I disabled comments. Also, I simply don't have the time or desire to go through all the hundreds of comments I get to weed out the trolls, block them, and hide their comments. It's a waste of my time.
Let me be perfectly honest here... I have been on DA for 5 years. I am here for fun. Not only do I NOT make any money from DA, it COSTS me money. I am a business man, so time is money, so if you account for the amount of TIME I spend on here, it is even MORE of a loss. But - it's fun and I have made some good on line friends and a few personal friends.
I fear for this generation of loud mouthed, unsophisticated, undereducated, sophomoric juveniles who don't subscribe to decency and good manners. Not all of them, of course... but there is a significant percentage. I blame the internet for this unchecked bad behavior because there are no consequences for the things they say and do. But how will this spill over to their REAL lives and interactions with REAL people when they face situations that make them uncomfortable? It is, in my opinion, very damaging to personal growth to NOT have consequences to bad behavior. What will these flamers and trolls grow up to be? Probably politicians who post photos of their weiners on Twitter.
Anyway...THAT is the reason I no longer allow comments.

Totally understandable. Do you still do them at least? do you post anywhere else?
haha yes I get the occasional creepy/ troll email or comment but so far my DA experience has been pretty smooth considering I know how bad other nude models or photographers get harassed, I feel pretty lucky, hopefully that doesn't change!

You did a picture once that I'm in love with and can no longer find and I would seriously just love to look at it.  It's an image of a woman's behind and not much else and she is wearing like some sort of sheer dress and has a clitoris piercing.  It's like the most beautiful picture I've ever seen. Anyway, I'd love to see that again.  Thanks.

Wish I could repost all my nudes but it was too much hassle. NOT a place to post nudes if you want mature responses and respect for your work as an artist. But a dandily place to get attention if that's the objective.
If I knew which image it was, I'd email it to you.

If you come to Houston and do a workshop, I'm good for lunch. I said the same thing to Ed Reed with the Ravens and he showed up....:)

well, the challenge is always having a place to shoot and getting enough participants to make the trip worth it. Although lunch sounds great! :)
